Summary (early chapters ~75) 2.21.13
Holden Caulfield is the protagonist in The Catcher in the Rye, the book I'm reading. He's been forced to leave his current school, Pencey Prep, due to his behavior. Holden is 16 years old. He is emotionally sensitive and acts and thinks like a child at times. He seems like he's trapped in his own thoughts. His mental conditions did not allow him to stay at any kind of school and so he leaves Pencey. A fight with his friend made him leave Pencey Prep earlier that he planned. He knows that his parents are going to be upset once they found out that he's been kicked out of school, so he goes to a hotel in New York. He decides to stay there until Wedneday and go home. He goes to a club that's inside the hotel and he meets three women and try to order alcohol, when he's underage.

Response to the script 02.25.13
This scene takes place where Neo and Morpheus meet and talk about the matrix. By reading the script, it looks like Neo kind of trusts Morpheus and his team and so he wants to find out what's really going on. There's something that confuses me about Morpheus. He tries to explain something to Neo but it seems like there's something bigger behind it. In other words, his words make me think that he's keeping things to himself. But he's also giving us a basic idea of what the plot of the story is. His words don't directly mean something. He's describing what the matrix is in his own words. I can see that he knows a lot about the matrix and Neo,according to how he describes Neo's feelings.

Response 1 (early chapters)
The Catcher in the Rye takes place in late 1940s to the early 1950s and mostly in Pencey Prep and New York. I realized this book was written a long time ago when Holden, the main character, mentioned that he had lent his typewriter to one of his friends in his school. Holden Caulfield is a seventeen year old boy who is emotionally over-sensitive. He’s good looking according to what he said. Holden thinks he has to be in the mood when he does something. There’s no specific reason for what he does.
Pheobe is Holden’s little siter and she’s around 10 years old. She is intelligent, nice, and her childish innocence keeps holden happy. She doesn’t act her age and that’s what holden likes about her. They all used to get along before Allie died. Phoebe is the kind of person anyone can be with. When he describes phoebe, it’s easier to understand his thoughts and feelings. Pheobe’s important in the story because she helps holden make better decisions and make holden feel happy so he doesn’t get too depressed.
They really like each other, especially Phoebe. They spent a lot of time together before holden left for Pencey. They can talk to each other about almost anything. Their relationship tells us about holden’s thoughts. He wants to protect his sister from the changing world and to protect children’s innocence.
The scene I chose is actually a really short one and it takes place in the middle of a street. As he walked down the street, he talked about how he felt. He said he felt like he was getting lost and forgotten. It’s an important scene because these kind of things constantly tell us about how holden feels about certain things. When he said he felt like he was falling down as he went down the road, it means that he feels like he’s left alone, separated from the society.
It’s kind of odd how he visited his teacher’s houses. He was always failing in school so his teachers were always caring and worrying. I think that’s kind of weird because I’m not that close with my teachers. I may be, but I wouldn’t visit their homes?
Not only it makes me feel bad for him but it also makes me feel hatred toward him. He’s always putting himself into dangerous situations, not knowing what to do. That kind of confuses me. He sounds depressed ever when he’s happy. He’s too different. Phoebe warns Holden that their dad might get really mad once he finds out Holden was kicked out of school. No parents would be too careless with their children. Normally, parents get upset if their children aren’t well behaved. All Holden’s teacher treated him the same way. They were concerned and worried and they always wished him good luck. This made me understand holden’s problems a little bit better because they try to teach holden about his problems and how to handle them.
Questions I was wondering while reading the book: What made him think in such ways? Was it really necessary? What really bothers him? Who or what influences him the most when he makes decisions? Why does nothing really serious happen when he’s always thinking negatively?

Response 2 (middle chapters)
In the middle chapters, Holden Caulfel talked about his past when his brother Allie was alive. He was constantly reminded of his little sister and Allie. Before Allie died, Holden had no problems with anything. When he talked about the days before allie died of some disease, he seemed really happy and excited. This tells me why and how he began to change. The general feeling or mood of the book is depression. His negative perspective on everything he sees, feels and touches, makes me feel tired and angry. The author made Holden feel confused and bad about everything which also made him make wrong decisions. I feel upset and annoyed when i read the book because it's hard for me to understand whatever he does.
Ackley and Stradlater are both Holden's close friends. There aren't many similarities between them since their personality is very different. Ackley has poor hygiene and he seem to be really annoying to holden sometimes. He's nice and all and holden can talk to him about anything. It's mostly because Ackley has almost no friends and is greatly dependent on Holden. But Stradlater doesn't seem to like Holden or treat him as a friend. He's careless and not very likable. Though Holden describes him as the "handsome" one, he does not like him too much and feels jealousy all the time, which caused the fight between them. Stradlater may see okay but if you have a deep conversation with him, you'll know that he's kind of a mean person. The fight between Sradlater and Holden was the main reason Holden left Pencey earlier than he planned. Their thoughts and personality were way too different so their opinions always clashed. Holden was constanly asking questions to Stradlater (in an annoying way) and Stradlater didn't want to answer them. Holden didnt like the way he was being treated so they fought.
The narrator of the story is Holden Caulfield, the main character. He is the one telling the story about himself. The book is written in the first person view. This gives us more direct ideas of what holden thinks. I would pick Holden's realtionship with his little sister, Phoebe. Because Pheobe always supported her brother and her relationship with Holden was different from his relationships with other people. Like i said, the story was depressing and it kind of made me sad too but Phoebe made things better. She has all this positive energy that keeps holden happy.
"The best thing, though, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was. Nobody’d move. . . . Nobody’d be different. The only thing that would be different would be you." Holden said this at a museum in his town. He used to go to the museum a lot. He's saying that the museum does not change, people change. And every time they visit the museum, they feel different because they're the ones who changed. This tells me that he's not aware of the changing society and he wants to stay where ever he was. He's stuck in time and he feels bad about the changes around him.
